For long distance flights or trips which cause your legs to be still for an extended amount of time, stiffness and swelling can result due to minimal blood flow. Deep vein thrombosis can be a potentially harmful blood clot that can develop in the deep veins of the legs and cause excruciating pain. Compression socks are designed to improve blood flow by gently squeezing the circumference of your leg(s), and prevent such conditions. Standard compression socks usually come with a mild pressure to the leg whereas some conditions may require much more compression, where in most cases they would need to be prescribed.

Sock length can also vary; they can be knee-high or even to the top of the thigh depending on the area(s) that need to be treated.
