Knee Pain

A natural first step in finding relief from knee pain and discomfort.

Knee pain is a common occurrence for both men and women of all ages. The most prevalent medical condition responsible for knee pain is osteoarthritis, but there are also a host of other reasons for knee pain that aren't due to an underlying disease. If you are experiencing knee pain, click here now to schedule an appointment with a healthcare professional to provide you with the necessary treatment.

Acute or chronic knee pain may also be caused by heavy physical activity, lack of use, overuse, injuries such as sprains or strains, and prolonged kneeling.

Why Do I Have Knee Pain?

Many knee problems arise from an injury such as tendonitis or a meniscus tear. Others are due to wear and tear of the knee joints from the aging process, which is most commonly responsible for osteoarthritis.

Causes of Knee Pain

Knee injuries are often caused by stretched or torn ligaments. There are 4 types of ligaments in the knee, the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral collateral ligament, and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the most commonly injured of the four.

There are also many other common causes of knee pain in addition to ligament strains and tears:

  • Osteoarthritis: Most common in senior citizens. Occurs over time from wear and tear of the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs responsible for cushioning the bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints.
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS): Common in athletes. Pain is caused when cartilage under the knee is damaged from overuse or injury.
  • Meniscus Tear: Common in athletes. Injury occurs when there is forceful twisting or hypertension of the knee.
  • Patellar Tendonitis: Also known as Jumper’s Knee. Pain is caused by inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin bone.
  • Chondromalacia Patellae: Also known as Runner’s Knee. Pain is caused when the knee and thigh bone rub together as a result of the softening and breakdown of the cartilage on the underside of the knee cap.
  • Dislocated Knee: When the patella (knee cap), is moved from its normal position by trauma or a sudden change in direction.
  • Popliteal Cyst: Also known as a Baker’s Cyst. A fluid-filled sac at the back of the knee causes tightness and restricts movement, typically as a result of arthritis or a sports injury.
  • Plica Syndrome: Plica is a fold in the thin tissue that lines your knee joint, this is what allows you to bend and move your knee. Plica Syndrome occurs when there is inflammation of one of these folds from injury or overuse
  • Osgood–Schlatter disease (OSD): Common in adolescents. This temporary knee pain is exacerbated by physical activity causing discomfort and swelling at the top of the shin bone, just below the knee cap.
